What is employee journey?
The employee journey is literally translated as the journey that employees take within an organization. In other words: from the application to the departure. The employee journey is also called the staff journey. As an employer you naturally want this journey to be experienced as positive by everyone and for the journey, the employee journey, to last as long as possible, provided this is mutual, of course.
How to ensure a positive employee journey
1. First impression is important
Not only does the applicant want to make a good first impression, as a company you also have to make an effort. Regardless of the size of the workforce. That is why it is important to take a critical look at the way the company and the position are presented, both in the vacancy and on social media. Make sure it sounds attractive, but does match reality. A video in which employees talk about their work and experiences within the company is a pleasant and widely used method to do this.
2. Make them feel welcome from day 1
Also it is important that employees always feel welcome and know that they are appreciated, especially on a first day. You can make this happen in different ways. By laying out a nice goody bag, giving a tour and by continuing to talk with them. Also after the onboarding . Additionally, a clear onboarding process is of great importance during the intake.
3. Stimulate growth and development
Employees are looking for growth and development. Create space for growth and give your employees control over their personal development. And just as important: ensure there is sufficient guidance from a manager.
4. Place value on work happiness
It won't surprise you to hear that healthy, happy and vital employees are more productive. Investing in employee happiness therefore has not only a positive effect on the atmosphere within the company, but also on the company's success. From monthly drinks to joint bootcamp classes and from good coffee to fun little gifts in the mailbox. They may seem like small details, but are of great importance for work happiness and thus also for the employee journey.
5. Ensure a pleasant departure
There comes a time when the employee journey comes to an end. And whether that is voluntary or not, it is in any case good to pay attention to it. A smooth offboarding is, after all, important for a positive conclusion to the employee journey (and your company's image). An exit interview, a farewell get-together and a small gift should therefore not be missing from such a send-off.
Insight into the employee journeys
Of course it is also good to have insight into the employee journeys of all employees. When employees experience their journey as positive, it also contributes to employer branding. If the opposite is the case, this can manifest itself, for example, in a lack of motivation, with negative consequences for the company.
Therefore it is – especially for the HR department and management – good to investigate this with progress meetings, employee satisfaction surveys, assessment interviews and performance reviews.
