Good clientship: tips for feedback to freelancers and interim professionals

To ensure good cooperation with temporary staff, giving feedback plays an important role. It contributes to the successful completion of an assignment and the professional development of those involved. Often, in cooperation with freelancers or interim workers, little feedback is given. How can you, as a client, give feedback to freelancers and interim workers in a good way? And how can you meet their needs?

What is good commissioning?

Good client practice means that, as a client, you ensure the right preconditions are created so that collaboration with a freelancer or interim worker proceeds optimally. These include, among other things, a clear contract, but also a fair fee and timely payment.

It is also important that you look at other aspects that promote good collaboration and increase the job satisfaction of your temporary staff.


The purpose of feedback

By giving feedback, you not only improve the current performance of the freelancer or interim worker, but you also contribute to his or her personal development. Consider the following points:

  • What was the purpose of hiring the freelancer or interim?

  • What progress is he or she making toward that goal?

  • What can he or she do to deliver better performance?


A good conversation

In order to be able to give feedback effectively, it is important to have a good conversation with the self-employed person or interim worker. We give you a number of tips for a conversation:
 

1.    Open communication

Make sure you communicate in a constructive and respectful manner. Ask open questions and listen actively to the input and experiences of the self-employed person or interim worker. In this way you create an environment in which a person feels heard and in which there is room for mutual understanding.
 

2.    Concrete examples

It is important during the conversation to give examples of the performance of the freelancer or interim worker. Discuss specific tasks and projects in which he or she performed well and mention these successes. This way you give the freelancer or interim worker recognition and encourage his or her motivation to continue to grow and develop.
 

3.    Reciprocity

Be prepared to also receive feedback yourself from the self-employed contractor (zzp'er) or interim worker. Een goede samenwerking is gebaseerd op open communicatie en wederzijds respect. Door het uitwisselen van feedback ontstaat er een dialoog en kun je als opdrachtgever de samenwerking met zzp'ers en interimmers optimaliseren.
