From pilot to practice: success and benefits of ‘social return’

Social return is no longer a side issue but has become an essential part of the procurement process of professionals for many of our clients. A fine example of this earned an honorable nomination last spring for the 'Total Talent Management Awards 2025': the successful collaboration between client (Central Judicial Collection Agency, CJIB), suppliers (codeGorilla and Sogeti) and intermediary (Circle8) in the field of Social Return On Investment (SROI).

We look back with Martine Uitterdijk, advisor for labor participation, and Floris van Onselen, operational manager IT, Data & Innovation. Within the Central Judicial Collection Agency (CJIB) they have started a program to give participation candidates more opportunities within IT, Data & Innovation, but also within the national government in the North.

Focus on talent

In 2019 Martine and Floris started with an innovative idea: no longer looking at diplomas, but focusing on talents. Floris explains that within IT it was often difficult to get participation candidates to land well in teams. "We then decided to form a team and, as CJIB, jointly guide, train, educate and coach them," he says. In 2021 the project became reality; eight employees were screened, trained and educated in collaboration with Code Gorilla, supported by Circle 8 and Sogeti.

"Their analytical skills are perfect for IT. In no time some can already hold their own with the developers in our teams. Through tailored guidance, understanding and by focusing on talents, we bring out the potential in these colleagues. That went beyond just technical knowledge. The soft skills also received attention," Martine says. "How do you behave in a work environment, for example? And how do you handle the money you earn?"

Growing together

In the beginning there was dissent. "Should you put them together," people said, "they should just join in." Floris saw the strength in creating a safe environment where candidates can grow together. "This group is particularly good at collaborating and having understanding for each other," he says proudly. They understand each other's challenges and give each other space. This has led to impressive personal successes; some participants have been able to buy a house or have moved in together. They finally have a story to tell when they come home. That's what it's about.

The project had multiple successes; the good cooperation between Circle8, Code Gorilla, Sogeti and the CJIB, various participants flowed into regular teams and secured permanent positions. They have a future now, where it was sometimes truly hopeless. From not being able to leave the house, to now. Buying a little house by the water. Sometimes they were literally picked up from home. By facilitating that you show; you are allowed to be here and we are here for you. Whatever it is.

What drives us is seeing again a very happy person who has grown and can take a step in life.
