Every company has a unique organizational culture. A pleasant work culture contributes to your professional growth, but also to satisfaction when carrying out tasks. Research has shown that people who feel that their own norms and values (or: purpose ) do not correspond to those of the company, leave sooner.

But how do you find out what the right work culture is at a client? We have put together a number of questions that will give you more insight into the work culture at a potential client.

First steps

With good preparation you are stronger. You can do this by conducting online research beforehand. Study the company page carefully and look at the social channels to find out which message the company and the employees convey.

Are you aware of your own preferences? If you're not used to commuting to work, and you suddenly have to travel more than 2 hours by public transport three times a week, it demands a lot from you. Do you prefer a flat organization or are you in favor of hierarchy? Do you take part in the Friday afternoon drinks or do you go straight home after finishing your tasks?

There are no right or wrong answers. Only when you know what your ideal work environment looks like can you more quickly see whether a company's culture suits you. Then come up with some questions you can ask during the introductory interview. This not only gives you insight, but also shows your interest in the assignment and the company.

Below are 10 concrete tips:

The right questions

Do you have an introductory interview coming up soon? With the following questions you will have a little helping hand to find out whether the company culture suits you.

  1. How is feedback given and received within the company?
This question gives you insight into the communication style and openness within the organization and between the employees.

  2. How are successes and achievements recognized and rewarded?
This is how you find out whether your efforts during the assignment are appreciated and acknowledged.

  3. What opportunities are there for professional development and growth?
If it's a long-term assignment, it's important to know whether there is room for your personal and professional growth. You can also ask what the expectations are.

  4. How is the work-life balance encouraged?
A good balance between work and private life contributes to your well-being.

  5. How are creativity and innovation handled?
By asking this question you find out whether your ideas and initiatives are encouraged while carrying out the work.

  6. What is the management style within the company?
It is important to know how your direct supervisor leads and can support you in the work process.

  7. How is collaboration between different teams and departments organized?
Good collaboration is the driving force behind the success of every company.

  8. What is the company culture and how is it maintained?
It may seem like an obvious question, but you can still learn a lot by asking it. After all, you want to understand the (behavioral) norms and values of the company. If the answer is evasive or vague, this can indicate an unclear policy.

  9. Are there possibilities for flexible working, such as working from home?
Flexibility can improve your work-life balance and increase your productivity.

  10. How are mistakes and challenges handled?
It is important to know how the company deals with setbacks and learning moments.

By asking these questions you get a better picture of the work culture with a client. It will help you make a well-considered decision when choosing a new challenge.
