Restart after the summer: 5 checks that every self-employed person must do in August to start Q4 successfully

Summer is, for many self-employed people, a breather: taking a step back, recharging, and maybe even enjoying a (well-deserved) vacation. But while inboxes are slowly filling up again and clients are restructuring their schedules, August is THE month for a strategic restart.

Why now? Because in August you lay the foundation for a powerful fourth quarter. And that means: thinking ahead, fine-tuning and making smart choices.

At Circle8 we guide independent professionals in IT, HR, finance and consultancy on a daily basis. Based on that experience we share 5 essential checks you can definitely do in August to be successful for the rest of the year.

Check 1: Your assignment and revenue targets for Q4

Q4 is the busiest quarter of the year for many companies. Budgets must be used up, deadlines are brought forward and projects are rolled out more quickly.

1. Do you already have your goals clear?
2. Which clients do you want to (re)activate?
3. What revenue do you want to generate in October, November and December?

Tip: Schedule contact moments with existing customers now. Many decisions for Q4 are made before September.

Check 2: Update your offering and positioning

The market is in motion and so are you. Ask yourself:

1. Is my offer still current and attractive?
2. Does my rate match the current market?
3. Should I sharpen my specialization or communicate more broadly?

Tip: Update your profile, pitch deck or LinkedIn description. Visibility = trust and trust is assignments.

Check 3: Structure your schedule and monitor your capacity.

A good restart means creating an overview:

1. Which weeks are you (partly) still available?
2. Do you have room for new assignments or projects?
3. Do you need to renegotiate or wind down certain projects?

Smart move: Go ahead and block off focus weeks or time for administration & reflection in your calendar. That way you stay in control.

Check 4: Check your administration, invoicing and cash flow

August is the perfect time to get your finances in order:

1. Have all your invoices been sent?
2. Are there any outstanding items from July?
3. Is your VAT-preparation for Q3 in order?

Make sure you enter Q4 with a clean financial slate. That prevents stress when the pace picks up again.

Check 5: Reactivating and expanding your network

Many assignments don't come through platforms but through your network. Augustus is the moment to:

1. To schedule coffee meetings with clients
2. To bring yourself back to attention on LinkedIn
3. To participate in events, intervision sessions or knowledge sessions in september

Pro-tip: Share a short update on LinkedIn about your availability or projects, it keeps you top-of-mind with many companies.

Augustus is your secret weapon for a powerful Q4

While many freelancers wait until “it's busy again”, you use August to restart strategically. With a sharp focus, an up-to-date offering and an activated network, you make Q4 your strongest quarter of 2025.
